Even if MTVU doesn't give a shit what happens to the youth of today, there's a few good folks out there fighting the good fight, helping to get something positive out to the masses. Word to Matthew Newton (and big thanks to Dana Meyerson for linking us!) for his piece on Invincible's "Ropes" video. We wrote about it a bit before here at AustinSurreal, but Matthew did a much better job. Check out the post and see the video on his site if you haven't seen it already, it's powerful.

Some Willie D Updates
All quite interesting. Word to my man Joro in Helsinki for the investigating. He found some great links.
Also this:
ORDER IN BULK AND SAVE BIG!!!
OK That was out of line. I feel horrible over here thinking about not only one of the most important voices in southern rap ever, but a good friend. This shit is insane. Anyway peep it:
This is the site where he was allegedly directing folks to after luring them on ebay.
Fraudwatchers.org thread about Texas Wireless.
A lot more info on the Examiner site than in any other place I have seen.
And here is a statement from the DA.
Scheisser.

Willie D Update from Isiah Carey
From Houston newsman Isiah Carey's blog:
ISIAH CAREY said...
Willie D will be in federal court today (Friday) at 10 am. He will be on the 7th floor in Judge Malloy's courtroom. If you're a fan and you want to show support you may just show up...the federal court house is in downtown Houston on Rusk at Bagby.
------------
Man I wish I could just up and drive to Houston right now. If I would have read this last night, I might have. To support the legend, the pioneer of this whole genre, the man who brought the souths mouth to the mainstream, and scared the hell out of said mainstream.
Ah, those were the days.
Anyway man, you can also click here to see Channel 2 in Houston's report on the situation complete with video footage of Willie D being led out of the court/jail/whatever that building was, and commentary by my man John Lomax.
This shit got my mind playin' tricks on me. I had to say it... I really hope he didn't do this bullshit. If he did though, we ALL need to think about how our legends, and our pioneers, and our musicians and artists who paved the way for all of us in this business to make money and feed our families are treated and have been treated.
I mean, this is not the first time, and won't be the last, but I hate to see legendary artists who made such a contribution to our culture go out like this. Obviously broke and desperate.
If indeed the man even did this shit.
But seriously folks, I know too many broke, musical pioneers. Fuck the whole music industry, I'm pissed now. I mean, again.

Houston Press on Willie D
KTRK on Willie D

Supposedly he was selling iPhones and electronics online and not sending out the product? Like some sort of online scam? Willie D is a lil crazy, sure, but he is not stupid. I have known him for many years. This really does not sound right. I know dude has real investments, and he is not an idiot, that is for sure. Um, this just does not sound right. What the fuck indeed.

2.5 Weeks Later...
Art City + Ladies of Rap Killin' it on Down Night
O.K. So here's the story. Just over 2 weeks ago, we did our first show featuring all female MC's, save for Devin who came in as like the special guest host for our first one, and then the next day I had to pack for Europe and the next day I left for Europe. See below if you don't know how I'm talm bout.
So I put all these photos on a jump drive and planned to resize and post them from my laptop, but um, yeah, I left the jump drive sticking outta my home computer for two weeks. Anyway, so yeah, below please find the photos from the Art City event and from our Ladie's Night show at the Scoot Inn. My wife put together the childrens stage, where I DJed Children's Music for 2 hours, and well, it really went down!

As evidenced by this photo. Eva, Elena and Ziggy PLAYING!

Also eating snow cones of course.

As evidenced by these photos.

My wife on the right.

This girl performed right after my set, so I guess I opened for her.

And of course this lady painted faces.

And art was everywhere. I shoulda done a better job at documenting, but alas...

Rebecca was in the place! Excited for Art and Children's Music.

This thing...

These...

And then yeah, we played.
OK So then that night, we headed over to the Scoot Inn where Devin the Dude and his Coughee Brothaz (why they brought no Sistaz, and never bring any sistaz, I have no idea), Jean Grae, Invincible, Perseph1, Staci Russell, Eyeris and Latasha Lee all performed and KILLED IT! I think we broke alittle ground this night showcasing some of Austin and Texas and the world's finest female hip-hop talent.
My question is this though, why were none of the local female MC's who weren't booked on this show, at the show? Real talk that's gonna reflect on y'all for future bookings. You can't even support this shit unless you are on it? That's pretty wack. We all have things to do, but y'all get on my ass all the time to do all this shit, and you can't even come drop $10 for the cause. Me and Jimmy Dean BOTH lost money on this show, cuz we felt the cause was important enough to spend on, and the local MC's just laughed at us really.
But next time I see them they sure as fuck will have something they want ME to do. Yeah, thanks.
But I'm not one to complain cuz real talk that show went down, and while we could have used a couple hundred more people, the 400-500 that were there had a great time.
And were treated to one of the best hip-hop shows this year in AUstin so far. And yeah, we've had Ice Cube, KRS, etc.

The legendary Mr. Cree aka Crop Diggie on the wheels. We need a female DJ though. Who is wreckin'?

Lolo held it down tought on the hosting and promotional tip. She put a lot of her heart into this show. And it showed.

Latasha Lee is one of the voices behind Carnival Beats and Carnival Beats is THE production team behind almost every Texas based rap song that you know (Still Tippin, Sittin Sideways, Barre Baby, etc). She came out and staright whooped fools with her raw emotion and incredible range. She should really have next out here.

And she brought flowers on stage. Nice touch.

My lil homey Eyeris moved back to New York yesterday. Boo on that, but she's a really fun MC with her own style and a lot of heart too. She will probably do better in NYC, I don't know. Actually, I don't believe that, actually.

Oh yeah, the HoustonSoReal style screwed and chopped photos have returned. I forgot to replace the batteries in my flash, and well, now I can't even find the charger to my camera itself, so yeah, it's a quandary. But honestly, I kind of like all these photos. Fuck it.

The lovely Staci Russell is also a force to be reckoned with on this scene here. What a voice and what presence! Good to see her on the solo tip real talk.

Then of course my lil cousin Perseph1 came up from Houston and we had to put her up on the show. I have no idea how this girl remembers her lyrics, there's so many of them! She's like a wildfire out of control inching up on the city.

Then OF COURSE my current favorite MC INVINCIBLE hit the stage one deep and just WRECKED! I mean, this woman is one of the realest ever.

You have got to go get that Shapeshifters album. Surely it's on iTunes, or down to your local record shop. Something. It's the most essential purchase you'll make this year.

THE LEGEND! JEAN GRAE! Also one of the Top MC's of all time in my book. One of the greatest writers ever in hip-hop and one hell of a performer.

Was great to reunite with my real homey for real.

She really does not ever need to leave the stage, ever. Just keep killing it, bringing it to the people and such.

Thanks for the flash dude.

Then this dude wanted a picture of his head.

Then my dude showed up. Again.

Then Invincible sold some merch.

Then Devin met Jean Grae.

Then Jean Grae went off pretty hard on a dude and then we left. The End.
Also we ate Fuddruckers on a Sunday morning. THE END.

ATX: Destiny By Design: Bedichek Kids CD Release Party!
Man this is one of the coolest after school programs I have ever heard of. It's not just some "hip-hop class," these kids actually make music and learn production and all that from the ground up, with the help of some of Austin's top producers, dj's, mc's and community leaders.

This week some of the students are having a CD Release Party and they would like to invite YOU.

Hey, other Austin sites, please repost this!

Ahhhh springtime, where did I leave off? Oh yes of course, with those very compelling photos from outside my London hotel window. What a great thing to leave you with. What is it now Wednesday? That was Sunday so yeah, there’s a lot of catching up to do.
We are right now on a train from Gotenborg to Copenhagen, and I tell you what, I am enjoying this WAY more than air travel. There are few means of travel as satisfying to me as riding on a train, in the springtime, thru Scandinavia. The fact that my seat number does not even exist only sort of bothers me. I’m ready for the old man to come tell me I am in his platz, whatever.
I’ll tell you about our latest flight incident in a minute, but let’s start with the good news.
LONDON WENT DOWN! Man it really, really did go down. The crowd was enthusiastic, the atmosphere was perfect. A-Trak and Seb Chew were in the house, but I missed them, um, Devin did a longer set than normal (Just added! “See What I Can Pull!”), and it was just really good to finally have the Dude in London. Word to Tornado Booking and Luminaire for taking the risk and making it happen on a Monday night. I was hoping more press and DJ folk and friends would have come out, but alas, London is a huge city that is hard to get around, expensive as hell, etc. I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to come from the East to the Northwest. Most of my people stay in the east. And the south. (Our taxi from the airport was $200 + tip!)
Anyway, day of show in London, Devin and I took it real easy, we had been going non-stop and Sunday night was supposed to be a night of rest. But, the TV only had 4 channels, and my mans Shaian, G and Rupert came thru, so we kicked it. It’s kind of weird, but I am still on Texas time. I go to sleep at 5 am which is 10 pm at home (It’s not totally strange for me to be in bed at 10 pm at home… yikes!) and wake up like 2 pm which is 7 a.m. at home. Which is when I normally get up anyway. It’s really weird.
Anyway the boys came thru and the prospects for weed were looking really shaky. None of my people were coming with it and we were bout to be faced with a night without smoking, which I mean, is o.k. for some people, just not really us. So my dudes said “Aw we will just go out and ask people on road mate, no worries, innit.” And I said “O.k. man well take my hotel room key and just come back up when you are all good.”
Well, they left for over an hour. I thought they either got jacked or arrested, but they came back with two small bags, $80 worth and I am talking about they were less than most U.S. $20 sacks, but whatever. It was the Cheese, and well, you know, anything is plenty mayne.
They also brought back a bucket of chicken wings and chips… Word to Sam’s!
(Oh shit these lil hooligans are standing in the breezeway of the train, and one just tried to open a door while the train is moving and a small alarm went off. They find this funny, as I would have as well at age 15, but if this train makes an abrupt stop because of them, it’s really goin’ down.)
Anyway, so we of course sat up till 5 a.m. drinking beers, smoking and eating chicken and talking about rap music (which at the moment is beginning to get old to me, but Sunday was cool as we were with some real SUPPORTERS and friends.)
I woke up at like 1 p.m. I guess and Devin and I hit the launderette across the road. $12 total to do one load of laundry yourself, washed and dried. $12. That’s $10 more than the spot in my hood in Austin. This should put London into perspective for any of y’all who have not been. That fucking city is expensive. It’s like $7 to ride the subway one way in one zone. It’s not the easiest place to function on a budget tour. But we made it through. Word to $5 falafel and also Nando’s chicken. They told me the extra hot was really extra hot, and well, yes, it’s extremely hot and I recommend it. Out thurr in Kilburn and such.
(O.k. the hooligans got off at the second stop. No one has kicked me out my seat yet. Surely it’ll happen soon.)
Just looked out the window, a cloudy day in Scandinavia is more beautiful than even the most sunny in lets say, well lets not insult anyone’s area, let’s just say this part of the world floors me.
So the show popped off. Dan Greenpeace and our boys from the Trill London DJ’s WRECKED all night and then my brother SWAY got on stage and just brought the freakin’ pain. I mean, the crowd was definitely not as big as Sway might generally perform to in LDN but they were feeling it and I for one was just happy to see how much this guy has progressed live in the years I have known him. His vocal acrobatics are something to behold. Definitely not the average MC. He did a lot of call and response and played with the crowd and got them super hype for the Dude.
When Devin hit the stage, the crowd went ape shit and as usual rapped along to every word. After the show Devin did a few interviews, we had some more beers and went back to the hotel with the other dudes. Talked about rap, drank, smoked, chilled with good southern rap supporters in London, like we supposed to.
Got up the next day and left the hotel at 11 a.m. for a 3:15 p.m. flight from Stansted Airport. Our much smarter than I agent, Fred, demanded we leave by then. Even though I know London is a bitch to get around I was like, “We are leaving 4 hours in advance? O.k. I guess.” And well, I had no idea what a rigamarole we were about to be put through.
This is the part where I go off - MOTHERFUCK RYANAIR. They are an evil company, a horrible company and I do not know how anyone could stand to work for them. Even in this economy, I know we all need jobs, but I cannot believe that anyone would ever work for them, or fly them more than once. People say “Oh they are so cheap.” They are not cheap at all and I will tell you why.
Devin has three bags and yes one of them is a big ass suitcase. We were fully prepared to pay for overage, this is not an issue, the issue really starts with other charges and works its way up to what these fucking pieces of crab apple scheisser try to charge you for excess baggage.
First of all, we were in a hotel in London that didn’t even have a phone, let alone a place to print our boarding passes. We show up at the airport, key in our confirmation number and the little machine informs us that since we did not check in online, and would be printing boarding passes with them, it would be an extra 20 pounds. That is $40 a piece straight up JUST TO PRINT A BOARDING PASS. Bullshit, and evil.
Then we keyed in the amount of bags and paid the extra money for Devin’s extra bag and went to drop them at baggage drop. Of course they were over weight, Ryanair allows for 15 kilos TOTAL while most other airlines allow for 20 kilos and sometimes 20 kilos per bag. The man looked at me in all seriousness and said that Devin would need to pay 380 pounds in excess baggage fees. That’s $700 mayne. So we argued a bit, shuffled some luggage, and somehow got it down to $200 in excess bag fees. Waited in three lines to pay for the shit, etc. It was the biggest waste of time and money I have ever spent.
Same dude told Devin he could have two carry-ons, but when we got to security they said no way, only one carry on, so we had to go back in line and pay another $40. So yeah like $240 in excess bag fees. Thank you Fred for making us go early.
So we spent so much time doing that shit we barely had time to eat anything. We ran like 15 minutes across the entire airport to the Ryanair area (they hide them from the regular people I guess), grabbed a $7 cheese and tomato sandwich and stood in line for like 30 minutes to board. Then we got on the plane and their seats are the smallest, shittiest plane seats I have ever experienced. Then they tried to sell everything under the sun on that fuckin’ plane, including scratch off lottery tickets! Anyone who would buy a “lottery ticket” from those rip off piece of shit motherfuckers deserves to be ripped off.
There was advertising blaring through the speakers for half the flight and ad’s (In Italian for some reason) on all the overhead luggage bins. I am telling you, the entire experience made me sick and I am warning you to not be fooled by Ryanair, as we were. I want to see them go out of business so bad. I’d fly to London just to do a dance in their dead fuckin’ terminal in the far end of Stansted. MOTHERFUCK RYANAIR. Never, ever fly them. You will get fucked. Fuck them.
But whatever, we made it to Gothenburg and the Dude killed it once again. Wasn’t much time for anything between landing and sound check so we went and did that, ate a lasagna, had a couple beers and then it was showtime. Did you know that there is a law in Gothenburg that you cannot have beer or any drinks in the backstage area? You have to have a special, expensive license for that and also someone to watch over the people in the room to make sure no one drinks too much. Um, it’s a bar in Sweden, everyone is pretty much going to drink too much. Including us. It is what it is, pigs.
So yeah, the show killed and I DJed a little bit after his set. ON CDJ’s all with rap music I have picked up over here. New Lars Vaular, Ralph Myerz, Keyza Soze, and then of course I hit ‘em with a little Invincible and Finale as those were the only CD’s I brought for this tour (Europe look out for both of them in July!). Shit was real fun, but then I got back to the hotel, the wi-fi was down, I couldn’t call home WHICH SUCKS I NEED MY FAMILY TIME, so I went to sleep at 3 a.m. and woke up at 5:30 a.m. then back to sleep at like 6 a.m. till 10 a.m. Yes I am doing great and YES WE CAN COPENHAGEN! Shit, we will be there before you ever see this. I assume there is no wi-fi on this here train….
Nope.
I jacked em from Eyeris's Facebook. So yeah man.
But suffice it to say...

Eyeris, Staci Russell, Lolo, Invincible and Jean Grae THIS MY PEOPLE!

Jean Grae and Lolo

My bro DJ Crop Diggie and My girls Eyeris and Lolo!

Jean Grae WRECKIN'!

Miss Amedica and Lolo! Miss Amedica finna Graduate and such.

Me with my peoples including Perseph1 who is a top MC for sure. She said to me last Sunday "Yeah, you would Twitter." Yeah, I would.

Devin and them Coughee Brothaz on stage, not sure why none of the Sistaz showed up!

Devin & I in our new jackets in Bergen, Norway
Word to Leca for the photos and INI CLothing for the gear and my new hat from MUNSTER - CLUB OF SKATERS!!!! I'ma try to raid Devins camera tonight and such. Read whole post below before bed and do not sleep walk!

Devin the Dude and MattSoReal are currently in Bergen bout to go to London and well here's pics of Munster!
Man for real I am sitting in my room at the Hotel Terminus in Bergen, Norway, I guess called that cuz it's just behind the train station, watching BBC news talm bout the tea parties in America and anti-Obama sentiment. Also swine flu. I haven't had any Alex Jones in my life since I left Austin last week, which I suppose is good to an extent, but I am having my own thoughts listening to the news and shit over here about this swine flu shit and something tells me there is something big and horrible on the horizon. Not a pandemic, but like America swooping down and seizing Mexico, I don't know. This at times is what I dream about, and these are not good dreams.
But I mean, I could be wrong. Really what I am doing is sitting here hoping I don't get swine flu, and enjoying the fact that I don't have to be anywhere for 3 hours. This whole trip has been amazing, each show special, and generally crowded, and as I said below what's really making this trip for me is all the amazing people we have met along the way. Friends and biz associates both new and old, I mean seriously. I'ma attempt to recant some things. But first here's some flicks from Munster.

Yarah Bravo opened up the show and then later in the night rapped throughout DJ Vadim's set and killed it with her insane energy. What a fun performer and a great gal. Seriously, that whole crew, her, Vadim, That Fucking Sarah, Karen... hold up I am getting ahead of myself.

Devin WRECKED Munster. The crowd was so enthusiastic (Yeah, um Devin, PUT A FUCKING ENCORE SONG ON THE CD PLEASE BEFORE WE GET BEAT DOWN BY ANGRY VIKINGS!) and it seemed like everyone in the house knew every word. It was like that in Berlin as well. Just great energy from all sides.
And a side note, I think I mentioned this on the blog before, but one of my biggest, most positive life changing experiences was when I was 15 years old. It was 1987, the summer between my 10th and 11th grade years. I was able to be a part of a student exchange with Immanuel Kant School in Munster and spent 3 weeks there, and one week in Berlin. Being 1987, the Berlin Wall was still standing and communism was in full effect in the east. On that trip, like this one, I met some amazing people who really touched my life and made me realize just how big this world is and how nothing is really ever impossible. Richard Henry may try to dispute that fact by saying something like, "Well you know Matt you can't fly like a hummingbird simply by flapping your arms. THAT's IMPOSSIBLE." Yeah dude, you know what I mean. It's a complicated statement, I know, similar to turning on a TV in a Hotel Room in Europe (why do you people make so many simple things so hard?). Seriously, it takes me 10 minutes to get the TV on in almost any hotel room.
So as a young teenager, walking through East Berlin seeing really how the other half lives (and yeah, there's many halves, I know, but if you would have seen this grey place back then...) and then sitting on a train with brilliant German kids who spoke 8 languages and shit, had a huge effect on me. So I guess what I am saying is it was great to get back to Munster and Berlin. We even stayed in the East and when I walked to the Alexanderplatz I freaked out cuz like THAT WAS THE SPOT! It's alot more colorful and happy now though. But that big scary TV Tower still stands, and I guess is now a restaurant. Why I am rambling about this, I am not entirely sure.
Anyway.

This is Karen from Subotage Entertainment in Berlin. A STAR AMONGST STARS! Seriously, she hooked up Germany for us along with our brothers Fred and Ricky at Tornado Booking in Norway and treated us famously. Thank you so much for giving us our first German shows ma'am! We will be back, and lets not forget Invincible in July!
Devin got a lot of press in Germany. Like 7-10 interviews per city it seems. Ha. Shit was so dope. After the show we headed upstairs with a lil crew of drunken Devin fans, like this dude...

And kicked it till he got done. Drinking Corona's and such. In fact, that's my only complaint so far. How you gone give Texans some Mexican beer in the Beer Capital of the universe. Hahaha. Naw, I am certainly not trippinG. In fact, our bartender in Kaiserslautern told me that she PREFER'S Corona over most German beers. I was like, "Man naw, you PREFER sipping a Corona on the beach. It is not possible that you would prefer..." Anyway that ended up in a whole debate and then she said she was just in Mexico so I ran like hell!
Naw, I really ain't trippin' off that shit. I'm trippin' off much deeper shit in relation to that shit.

So yeah, here's one of the interviews. Dude's brought a gang of German beers and liquors for Devin to try.

These dudes read this blog so that's automatic points for them! Thanks bro's!

This is my new lil homey for life THAT FUCKING SARA! What a star this one is as well and I am not even tripping. She's good friends with my homegirl Eyeris, and so we kicked it the whole time talking about music and shit. She's a really dope DJ who can mix and scratch like hell, and well, you should know more about her.
And you know, extreme sexism in hip-hop and life in general has been on my mind a lot lately. Which is why we are starting the Female MC series in Texas and really trying to rep for the ladies who are really doing it. Rapping and DJing and Producing and KILLING THESE FUCKING FOOLS, and all but being ignored. We gotta get That Fucking Sara to Texas.
And oh yeah, I stupidly unloaded the pics from Ladies Night in Austin last week to my home computer and did not put them up in time before we left for Europe. I then put the files on a flashdrive for this laptop and lost the flash drive, probably in my car. So yeah, brilliant. I'll get 'em up asap though.
I'm sure my boy OG at Luxury Mindz will have his up soon anyway. He's 10 times the photographer I am.

Me and DJ Vadim. People also may be sleeping on RUSSIANS!

Keyza Sosa is THE MAN in Germany to me. He's down with the SPC to the extent that he even produced a song with K-Rino and Chalie Boy! Man, I'm telling you, don't sleep on my dude Keyza. He also came with us to Munster to kind of help out and such and he was a major asset out here on this road! So thanks bro.

And then of course DJ Vadim and Yarah Bravo!

And then of course B-Girls in fool effect. Do we forget the B-Girls too? Yes we do.
Anyway, so the battery in my camera is rapidly dying and I cannot find a charger for it. (LONDON! Got a D70 charger? Meet me at the Hotel Black Lion in Kilburn tonight. HA! Also bring hash...) So I have not been taking as many photos as I should. The trip has been hectic. Sleep 3-4 hours, get up, drive, fly, wait, soundcheck, wait, hope to eat, drink too much. Etc.
Oh yeah, shit, here's a lil side note. After the show in Munster as we were leaving the venue, the Skaters Palace which is a chaotic warehouse that is just amazing, I twisted my ankle. At the moment I thought maybe I sprained it as it swelled like hell immediately and all I could think was, "oh Lord this is the second show, what am I gonna do if I can't walk?" And for 2 days I was limping like hell. Word to Yarah for giving and damn and such. Also, yeah thanks Yarah for giving me a Jager shot while I was drinking Havana Club rum. But I had to have the Jager cuz over here it supposedly has opiates up in it and well, I don't mind opiates. But that may have had something to do with it.
But said opiates probably had more to do with what happened later in the night. I got to the hotel, and got a bag of ice. Went to my room, took off my pants, laid down with ice on my ankle and went to sleep. Then all of a sudden, I woke up, in my skivvies, in the lobby, SLEEPWALKING! Like yeah, luckily we wear big T-Shirts and shit, cuz I was barefoot, and just like in the lobby walking. And of course did not have my key so had to ask the dude at the desk to let me into my room. He rode the elevator up with me and everything. Holy scheisser. No more Jager pon di road. I generally do not sleep walk, I am not sure what the fuck happened. But it did, or maybe I dreamed it.
Anyway, the next day we hit the Autobahn to Kaiserslautern. I love that shit, no speed limit so I was doing 100-115 the whole time, except when we were stopped in traffic. Both days drives were to be 3 hours and they turned into 5 1/2 hours because of traffic but whatever. I didn't take photos but it was a real cool event. Sucks too cuz my great friend Kersten Ganzemueller even came to the show. She interned with us for SXSW this year and was just such a bright light up in that corner of the office. So that was really nice and such.
BUT ALAS we are now being kicked out of the hotel because Devin is smoking and I have no idea what the fine will be and scheisser this SUCKS. OK More soon.
LONDON MONDAY NIGHT! AT LUMINAIRE!
---------------------
OK well that was uncomfortable. I can't believe I posted that load of gibberish up there without even reading it. Read it over at the Bergen airport and felt as though, whatever shall be, shall be, know'm talm bout? There is no editing on this blog. Hence the um, well yeah, I doubt 90% of you have made it this far anyway. If you have, leave a comment. Yeah. Follow me on Tweeter, all that.
Yeah so sorry about that. I thought I had another hour and a half to really chill up in the hotel, but uh yeah, the four guys who showed up with blunts to Devin's room kind of killed that.
A very stern and firm Norwegian woman came to his door and told him he had to go, and then of course she called me and I did as well. Soooo yeah, another $200 bites the dust in the name of non smoking rooms. Man, every hotel needs a smoking floor. Fuck that, that's all I'm saying.
So yeah I mean lemme see where I left off cuz man, there's some great stories to be told. If I were less brain dead I'd like to assume they'd be even better, but um yeah, oh yeah also I'm on the plane right now. This is the first time I've ever used a laptop on a plane, my others never had working batteries and weighed 95 pounds. So I am making a virtual DJ mix of hipster shit to listen to later and writing this thang. And yeah, drinking my last Ringnes beer for a week. I love Norwegian beers.
So lets see, Kaiserslautern was cool. We thought it would be huge cuz there's huge US Military bases in the area. And we did get some of those cats, but realy since it was May 1st, May Day, the day for the workers, everyone in Germany had off work, and it was one of the only weekends that the cats on base could travel. So a lot of folks were out of town and it wasn't as big as anyone thought. But my man Filthy, at Filthy Promotions DID HIS THING. Took care of us. Had a Thai buffet at the soundcheck just waiting for us, and that meant a lot. Cuz I mean, I love Bratwurst and potatoes, but after like 3 days of that, almost exclusively, save for a Chicken Donner, I was ready for some spicy veggies, and my man made it happen. He also put us up in the Hotel Barbarosa, just outside the city in the middle of the woods. It was a truly old building and surrounded by trees, and man, that's one of the things that makes me love this job so much. Not only being in different cities but totally different atmospheres. It was a good escape.
And like I said, my great friend Kersten showed up immediately upon arrival and hung with us for the whole show. It was her first rap show ever. And a Devin show in Kaiserslautern is a good place to start. Thanks for your help GANZEMUELLER. Stupidly I took no photos in K-Town. But trust me it went down.
So after the show, we went back to the hotel. I called home and talked to my family for a bit and checked out our navigation system. Google said the trip to Frankfurt would be 90 minutes and the Navi said 50 mins, so I went with the navi, and it was totally on point. Slept 5 1/2 hours and woke up feeling fresh for the first time in a week.
Hit the car and rolled to Frankfurt airport, listening to Invincible's Shapeshifters album, as well, it was the only CD on us, and it's totally my favorite shit right now. Devin was feeling her too. He kept making comments like "ooooh this girl is not even trippin'." And "Ooooh man, she is flowing, you cannot fuck with that." It's a great record to jam while driving 115 mph on the Autobahn for real. Gets me hype. Hoping my next trip to Europe will be in July with her and Finale. So far every promoter I've put n to her is with it. Seriously, go get Shapeshifters and tell me who is rapping as hard as Invincible. No one is right now. I'm serious. And hip-hop is getting good again. Tons of great shit at the moment, but they ain't touching this girls skills. Yeah, seriously. Talent wise she is at the very top of the game right now. Go get that album tonight. Like now. Itunes, whatever.
So we fly to Bergen and man, I have to say, Bergen may be my favorite city on the planet. I haven't been everywhere, but I personally have never seen a more beautiful city. Great people in a pretty city, surrounded by mountains and water. Old buildings all different colors dot the curvy streets that make no sense but somehow flow into some sort of coherent end. OH SHIT! Just looked out the window at a ship in the north sea! We are going much faster than said ship.
(Side note - The north sea is the first place I ever saw naked titties on a beach. Like, that's how they do it in Europe. But I will NEVER forget the time I went to the beach outside of Amsterdam with my friend Flavia and a few of her friends and as soon as we got a spot and put down our blanket out came all their titties, and my 24 year old ass was like, trippinG. I have to admit it, I was about to go Dirty American on fools out there. But I held it together and realized that in the end, this is really how it is supposed to be. Word to the north sea.)
Pretty sure this was Devin's 4th show in Bergen. Everytime its a winner, for real. This time around it was a last minute booking as we had something fall thru and our people came through and made it happen. Club was probably 200 capacity and I am telling you we had 350 people in there with 200 outside in the street watching the whole show. Not bad for like 2 weeks notice.
So, I "DJ" for Devin on the road outside the US. Basically I just control the levels and watch for different cues from the dude. So I go to the turntables and the host introduces Devin and the show starts and there's this redhead girl standing at the front of the stage and when I looked at her she smiled at me so big. Like she was bout to light up the room with her teeth or some shit. And I was back there high as hell like, um uh wow who is that, this is weird. And then she goes "Hi Matt," and turns out it was Deborah Brown from Two Star Symphony from Houston! A good friend who I see like once or twice a year in the weirdest places. Like, she used to live downstairs from my wife and I back when our first baby, Eva of course was born, and then when I went to get my wife some diamond earrings she was working for this crazy diamond dealer whose husband was killed in Belgium in the midst of the diamond trade in some capacity I don't totally remember, and she was working with her. Then there was some other weird place where she was working and I remember totally not recognizing her cuz I had no idea she would be there. Like last night.
So basically they are on the road backing up some vocalist, and it's a pretty budget tour, and like us they have been eating cheap Kebabs and sausages, not drinking much unless someone is providing it, etc. Just traveling the way how it goes. So after the show, my man Lars is like, "Do you want to come to my cafe, we can eat something and have a couple beers?" I said sure of course, lets do this and brought Deborah and her partners in Two Star Symphony to Cafe Italia in Bergen's Center. Man the place was of course closed, it was like 2 am and my man Lars went ahead and busted out the bacon, started frying it in a big pot, added some onions, a whole bunch of shit and like 45 minutes later we had a huge salad, huge Hansa beer's and this incredible pasta with said bacon, veggies, cheese... dude, I'm serious, Lar's has a bit of a record, but we gotta fix that cuz one day I need my dude to come to Texas so I can cook for him too. Dude just made a party for 6 people (also he played UGK thru the soundsystem the whole time) and we all just kicked it and it was pretty freaking fun. Like, I should have been asleep, but this was better.
We all said our goodbyes, and I stumbled back to the hotel as the sun started peaking out from beind the mountains, and am very happy to report that I didn't end up in the lobby in my underwear again. This flight is almost up and battery gone die and etc etc etc. So yeah more later.
