Red Bull 3Style MASSIVE Is REALLY GOIN' DOWN!
Next week in Houston TEXAS
And Ya, Mo, Be, Thurr. Friday Dec. 21st. Aka the day the Mayans had us all trippin' like Y2K.
If you have never been to a 3Style you are in for a real treat with this one. The brotherman A-Trak will be in the place alongside one of my favorite DJ's/Musicmakers on the planet Toy Selectah from Monterrey, Mexico and Trap Gawd R.L. Grimes. I don't really know what Trap is cuz I only hang around with people who listen to Screw music and avante garde jazz, but I heard its somewhere along those lines anyway but a little bit faster and you drink a few of them Red Bulls and vodkas and you will rilly fill dat. SO I AM HYPE!
FourColorZack will be in the Big City repping the U-S-A, Nedu Lopez will be wrecking the Brazilian Stylez, and DJ Drummer is coming down and coming through from CHILE aka THA BOTTOM! Seriously this is genuinely MASSIVE! So stoked.
If you don't know (fool disclosure) I (Pushermania Independent Productions Promotions Procurements and Positive Positioning) am working with Red Bull on their new Sound Select Music Program. I plan to make a huge announcement and tell you all about it, at the top of 2013. But seriously, after years of doing cool events with Red Bull (they are one company who have always, 100% kept it TRILL with me and I am not exaggerating) I am now working closely with them. Still an indie contractor dude in them streets but very much up in the mix for this new program that is gonna straight change the game for real. And if not change it, enhance it, which is what I am and have always been about. Pretty stoked right now.
So anyway this event right here will be a bit of a celebration for me in that H-Town with all my H-Town peeps. I better see all of you out there on the 21st. The world isn't going to blow up, don't even trip. We aren't gonna be let off that easy TRUST ME!
HIT THE SITE RIGHT HERE FOR ALL THE INFO YOU NEED! TICKETS ARE $10 AT THE DOOR. It's 18+ and it starts at 9pm at Stereo Live, 6400 Richmond Ave. I once saw De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest and Souls of Mischief in this club way back in the gap ALSO A FEW DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS in 1993. I am not kidding. This is all kinda surreal for me. Which is how I like to keep it. Real, yet also, surreal. Come kick it with your boy we have a lot to celebrate here. Holidaze. New beginnings. Extremely jammin' music. And also THE FUTURE. I swear, the Mayans are wrong, don't hide under your table all night anyway. Even if the world does go swinging out of orbit, we may as well be partying. Right? Right. See you soon H-Tizzle folk. I bet half of Austin will be in this Thang as well. #RB3STYLE
See below for a little taste of what you are in for. EXCLUSIVE WINNING SETS FROM THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD WHO WILL BE IN THAT H-TOWN!
Red Bull Thre3Style 2012 World Champ: Four Color Zack (USA/World champ)
Red Bull Thre3Style 2012 Runner Up: Nedu Lopez (Brazil)
Red Bull Thre3Style 2012 Third Place: DJ Drummer (Chile)

One of the livest songs I have heard in a minute, my brothers the League of Extraordinary G'z drop an ill visual to the new classic "Hankuri." The whole album is produced by Shane Eli and is really off the chain. These boys be rappin'. Really well in fact. On this cut Lowkey, Tuck and S. Dot just wreck. Can't wait to hear what Greezo, Lil J, Lil Bully and Reggie Coby have in store on this mug as well. Where it at where it at where it at. Oh here, order it here. Today.

Pics: Doughbeezy & Killa Kyleon at Collective Status
Talib Kweli, 10YR & Lyric Michelle at The Mohawk
MAN! This past Saturday was pretty incredible here in the ATX. Besides being spring like weather, we had two heavy events for hip-hop heads. First off I headed down to Collective Status on 6th Street for the Act Badd Magazine release party where cover dudes Doughbeezy and Killa Kyleon were siging copies and hosting an open mic of sorts. Super fun, like back in the day pass the mic style.
There were even like totally chicks there even.

The best reality rappers in the biz about to put it down with Shane Eli it's really goin' down. I've heard a couple tracks, and in the words of my brother Tuck, "the revolution is here." Rest in Peace to Octavis Berry. It's real.

Snow Tha Product - Cookie Cutter Bitches
Same could be applied to a lot of these mens, real talk. Just cookie cutter ass bullshit. And THAT is what I am most sick of real talk, I'm glad you feel me. Another one from one of the best in the game right now. Word to Snow Tha Product. #Uncut
South African Swag
The past two nights I have had very vivid dreams and in these dreams I was out in South Africa. My whole family was with me. I don't remember what they were all about, but I do know that this morning I got an email from my man Sbu and he sent me these two videos, and I wanted to share them with you. More reasons to GTFOOH and go to South Africa. Real talk. Also Afrika Implode-Explode® is a MOVEMENT. More on that later. This is totally unrelated, but pretty dope.

UGK's Too Hard To Swallow Turns 20 Years Old and I feel old but thankful
Young Sama'an Ashrawi comes correct with this one for sure!
This video means a lot to me, it literally took me back in time to the daze when I was working for Murder Dog Magazine. Yes, for a few years my main gig was with a magazine, the best magazine in the history of hip-hop in fact, and my main job there was to travel from city to city, hood to hood, and interview up and coming rappers, DJs and producers for features that may or may not have ever come out. It was a crap shoot for sure, but it was the time of my life.
This was in the late 90's to the early 2000's, and I'd literally get a call from the editor, Black Dog Bone, and he'd tell me that he wanted me to go to a city and find out what is going on rap music wise out there. I literally went to Pittsburgh, Miami, Gary Indiana, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Honolulu, Kansas City, Minneapolis and way more towns, all through both the Carolinas, etc, just pulling up and getting with some key players and would photograph and interview rappers. From big to small. It was a dream job for me.
I was always a big supporter of UGK. I first heard them when their first EP dropped (Banned!) and saw them right around when Too Hard to Swallow came out (many, many times, when they'd show up lol). I used to tell editors at lesser magazines how important they were to us in Texas, and they'd always tell me to shut the fuck up. One big time magazine editor even once told me, right around when Dirty Money came out, "Nobody cares about UGK." This went on for years.
But in the streets, one thing that always stood out to me was 99% of the rappers I would interview from the east, south, west, midwest, Canada, etc, 99% of them would mention UGK as a major influence on their careers/music. 8Ball & MJG came up a lot too. I'd talk to straight hood dudes, backpackers, nerds, playas, whatever, and when I'd ask who influenced them, UGK came up more times than they didn't.
So seeing this video is really amazing. From obvious choices like Killer Mike and A$AP Rocky, who you already know for sure were influenced by UGK to not so obvious ones like People Under the Stairs and Brother Ali, everyone on this video gives it up to the men who made some of the most compelling and soulful and meaningful rap music of all time, UGK. Makes me miss Pimp C so much. Rest in Peace to the Pimp, Long Live Bun B, and big ups to Sama'an and to everyone who takes documenting the real within our culture seriously. Every hip-hop head needs to see this.

Fat Tony ft. Old Money - BKNY
One of Houston's finest comes with an ode to Brooklyn and I have to say I fill dat. For I once upon a time lived in Brooklyn, in Clinton Hill in fact, on Clinton Ave in fact between Dekalb and Lafayette. It was a little different back then in 1994, but then again what wasn't. This is off Fat Tony's next album, Smart Ass Black Boy, produced entirely by Tom Cruz I am pretty sure, due out in 2013. Very excited for this as 2013 is Tony's year real talk I no ya fill dat.
Did you know that Fat Tony is gonna do a tour in Nigeria next year? It's happening for real. I am listening to Naija FM right now in fact, catching up with current events and current jams. Word to the motherland we are going the fuck back to Africa. It's real.

DAM featuring AMAL MURKUS - If I Could Go Back In Time
This is the type of thing hip-hop needs for real. And it comes from one of our cultures most powerful acts, DAM from Lyd, Palestine! These are my boys right here for real, I love everything they do. A true voice for the entire Middle East. Please read the translation below of the lyrics to this song. I won't spoil the surprise, but Dam not only covers a topic that many won't touch, they also came up with a concept that most people in hip-hop don't even try to do anymore. Its a truly unique technique. Telling the story backwards. So brilliant, so powerful. This is what I need more of in my life. Viva Palestine! Viva Dam!

Arabic script: If I Could Go Back In Time
Suhel Nafar:
Before she was murdered, she wasn't alive
We'll tell her story backwards from her murder to her birth
Her body rises from the grave to the ground
The bullet flies out of her forehead and swallowed into the gun
The sound of her echo screams, she screams back
Tears rise up from her cheeks to her eyes
Behind the clouds of smoke, faces of her family appear
Without shame, her brother puts the gun in his pocket
Her father throws down the shovel and wipes the sweat off his forehead
He shakes his head, satisfied from the size of the grave
They pull her back to the car, her legs kicking
Like a sand storm, she's erasing her own tracks
They throw her in the trunk, she doesn't know where she is
But she knows that three left the house and only two will return
They reach the house; throw her to the bed in violence
"So you want run away huh?" they wake her with violence
Amal Murkus (Chorus)
If I could go back in time
I would smile
Fall in love
Sing
If I could go back in time
I would draw
Write
Sing
Mahmood Jrere:
She dreams before falling asleep
We'll tell her story backwards, maybe understand
The clock hands move right to left
She reconstructs her steps as if she were lost
She sleeps prepared, money for the taxi
Plane ticket and passport under her pillow
Answer: leave the clothes in the closet; she plans to wear a new life
Question: what if they ask what the suitcase is for?
She went to bed, leaves table
Eats well, she must act today
Her nose stops bleeding, that's what they see
But it's a fresh wound; before they will beat her she will beat them
Her mom says "your life is like heaven"
She's right, if you taste the forbidden you better know someone is watching
Two hours before dinner, the phone hangs up
Her mom is shocked "the flight is delayed"
Phone rings
Amal Murkus (Chorus)
Tamer Nafar:
Before she answers, she isn't even asked
The story is like the logic in her life, all backwards
Her hands up in the sky, begging for help
Their hands up in the sky reciting the Fatiha (ceremony before marriage)
The calendar page moves one day back, the time is
Afternoon, the argument is over, her brother commands her
Blood flows from her lips to her nose
A sound of a fist, his hand jumps from her face
It's the first time in her life that she says "NO!"
Her mom announces happily "tomorrow you will marry your cousin"
If I look through the album of her life
I won't see a photo of her standing up for her rights
It's hard, the pages are stuck to my hand
Her past full of blood and tears
But we promise you, from her murder to her birth
Their expressions filled with anger as if someone announced a crime
"Congratulations, it's a girl"
The beginning.

The Niyat ft. Tabu - Gun State
These dudes right here! Been doing it for years. Some of the hardest lyricists ever. Love to hear raps where the MCs interact instead of just the typical verse hook verse shit. I saw Jneiro Jarel the other night at The Flat and he brought out his original group Nubian Nomads. This week has been one great memory after another. Both The Niyat and Nubian Nomads used to be up in my first club night ever (lol at "club night") The Hip Hop Coffee Shop. Now Jneiro has a whole album with MF Doom and the Niyat is still killing it and we are all walking tall, 20 years later. #inspiring

ATX Hip-Hop LIVE on KUT!
Riders Against the Storm (R.A.S.), Kydd Jones, Crew54, & Bavu Blakes in Studio 1A
So amazing to see, I mean hear, this happen (wish I could have seen it happen!). Word to Jay Trachtenberg, Haley Howle and all the good folks at KUT for hosting some of Austin's heaviest hip-hop talent live in Studio 1A. This is a great look at some of my favorite artists right now. I think Austin hip-hop is looking and sounding real dope in 2012. See for yourself. Hope I get to hear some of these jams randomly, now and again on KUT. What it do John Aielli?

Why Bavu look so California? When is KUTX starting? Do they need a hip-hop show?
Experience all of these artists live Saturday night at the postponed Yasiin Bey show! Word to Chris Proper and happy birthday to him.

Nicest thing ever
I mean damn near the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me in all my history in the music shit. Thanks so much to my homey Samaan for making this happen and all of the artists involved. Its much appreciated and I thank all of you as well, for being who you are. This is really big for me. I've never been so appreciated, and also not appreciated, for anything in my whole life. But whatever, that is the past. Pushermania is the future. Also the present. More to come.
Fat Tony - "Denim Guinness Boys" (Prod. by Tom Cruz)
More madness from the genius of Houston rap, Fat Tony. Last night Asli from The Tontons posed the question, "Why does someone always have to die in Fat Tony videos?" Good question.

VIDEO: PersephOne - al jawab
I think this would be considered SFW as opposed to NSFW, I dunno, use your discretion. Ain't no nudity up in here. But its sexy than a mug. PersephOne is one of my favorite MCs both musically and as a human being. I often wonder how the hell she remembers all those words she spits, but she does, and I have never seen anything like her in hip-hop or any other music before. She's a walking work of art that spits real fire and venom unto the cosmos. I met her a long time ago and some of my fondest memories revolve around her coming to my old radio show in Houston, Damage Control, and going into the mic room when we would have freestyles. There'd be like 10 dudes workin' wood wheels and swang a langin their written bullshit, and she would step to the mic and unleash an interstellar superhighway of off the dome, off kilter, sometimes off color lyrics and everyone in the room would just back the fuck up. And now she's made one of the greatest videos of all time, OF ALL TIME. Ladies and Gentlefolk... my lil sis PersephOne...

Red Bull Soundstage A3C Showcase Really Went Down!
And was really dope. Check out the video below to relive a bit of it!
SXSW Hip-Hop Showcase 1994? Yup
Also I no longer work for SXSW
Found this gem of a VHS tape in the archives at my moms house this summer and finally got it converted to DVD and then to a file and then to the Youtubes. This takes a long time for old guys like me, so I am just getting it up now. What a wealth of history there is here.
I was lucky to have met Andre Walker back in 1993 or so. He was in Austin and I was in Houston and we connected over a love for underground music and a will to make a connection between the two cities. At the time he had just taken over the duty of booking hip-hop for SXSW from Kier Worthy. Back then there was only one showcase or so per year. In 1995 there were two (wish I had those videos too!).
Andre Walker Magic Video Interview
Andre let me help select the groups for this, and I also hosted the entire night. Thank God there's no footage of that. The 22 year old me yelling curse words in an Odd Squad shirt and such, with an even more awkward "accent" than I have now.
Anyway those were the daze. Peep the videos below. Mad Flava were a real ray of hope for us back in those days. Blac Monks represented a whole new breed of Houston street music, Sociopath Left showed me how many directions hip-hop could really go, as did Sockeye in a sense as well. Heads & Dreads blew my mind consistently. Poetic Souls and their crew Da Psyko Ward helped form my love for REAL lyrics, etc. Dank and them showed me that there was more to Austin than just 6th street and great breakfast places. Word to DJ Cassanova.
There were more acts on the showcase, but I need to upload them and that process, well, it's a bit much for an impatient old man.
Also for those who were wondering, I no longer work for SXSW. That ended in March of this year pretty much. So please stop asking me about it, and tell a friend, to tell a friend, to stop asking me about it. The new company is PUSHERMANIA and there's a lot in the works. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that. Enjoy your trip back to 1994. The Gravediggaz headlined this show but they said they didn't want anyone to record their set, and whoever recorded this, listened to them. OH WELL! This whole series means a lot to me. Enjoy.

Scion Music(less) Conference 2012
REALLY WENT DOWN
Really, it really went down.
Last week I had the honor of being a part of the third Scion Music(less) Conference. I attended the first one, two years ago, and was impressed, but this year was straight up incredible. So many good people and even better vibes. And to be honest, even at the crochety old age that I am, I even learned some thangs.

SiriusXM Opens New Broadcast Studio in Austin
I've BEEN saying that this needed to happen. Maybe even since satellite radio came into existence. They needed to have a studio in our little musical town, and now they do. Word them up, as they say.

I am very much in favor of anything that provides an alternative to what has happened to terrestrial radio. I've always had a bit of a fantasy of getting on satellite radio with the jams, but always figured I'd have to move to New York to do so, and that ain't happening. I'm way too lazy for New York. And too impatient for public transportation. And get really insanely angry when I have to pay $12 to go through a tunnel or over a bridge. But whatever. Things about Austin make me mad too.
Whatever happens I am just glad that more cool things like this are coming to our city. When we had a 3 month trial of SiriusXM in the Honda, Willie's Roadhouse was one of the channels I'd tune to the most (sorry Shade 45 but I had the kids up in the car a lot, they kinda think hip-hop is silly. They didn't complain when I'd have Backspin on though). Shade 45 is dope though, and pretty much reason enough for any hip-hop head to make the investment. With commercial radio limiting themselves to 4 artists and 13 songs at any given time, and college radio being almost gone for hip-hop, well yeah, this is where it's really at. I can only jam YouTubes and Soundclouds so much. I'm actually a person who likes it when a real person hips me to new things. Call me crazy. Word to Tony Touch.
So yeah lemme know when you want a Live from the Dirty South show SiriusXMers (or something like this), now that I am unemployed (Oh yeah I forgot to tell y'all, lol). I'ma have to subscribe now. Opening reception next Friday, but I'll be at A3C fest. More on that later. official press release below. Get hype.
NEW YORK–October 3, 2012– Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today that it has officially opened its new broadcast studio in Austin, Texas.
The new studio, in Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater, 310 Willie Nelson Blvd, will be home to SiriusXM shows, musical performances, interviews, special broadcasts and more.
SiriusXM will host a grand opening event on Friday, October 12 at the new studio with special guests Willie Nelson, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and others. Nelson’s SiriusXM channel, Willie’s Roadhouse, channel 56, will broadcast with host Dallas Wayne live from the new studio weekdays from 12:00—6:00 pm ET and will broadcast live from the event.
“Austin is one of America’s most vibrant music cities, and we are excited to expand the SiriusXM footprint there with our new studio,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SiriusXM. “The unpredictable but influential music scene of Austin, its artists and its style, will be represented by the amazing array of artists, and the shows and channels that will broadcast from there. Willie is an iconic and much-loved artist, who has been part of the SiriusXM family for years, and we are thrilled to have him help us open the studios.”
The SiriusXM studio is situated in the same complex as the Austin City Limits Live concert venue, giving SiriusXM unique access to performers and performances alike. Additionally, Radio Margaritaville, channel 24, and Outlaw Country, channel 60, will also broadcast from the Austin studio.

The Tontons Take Pop Montreal 2012
My favorite festival! And probably theirs now too.
Asli from The Tontons getting live at thier first Canadian show EVAR!
There's more pictures after the jump, but I should have taken more. Ever since Instagram came into my life, I started using my phone cam more than my real one, and well those are embarrassing. However if you want to see more pics from my Montreal trip, check the ones after the jump and also on my Instagram, @Pushermania

OCCUPY THE VOTE!
New Project I'm Working On
Man hold up it's really goin' down in that H-Town. Over the course of the next few weeks, up until the election November 6th, I'll be going back and forth to Houston working with Texans Together Education Fund putting on events out in them streets getting people to register to vote, to pledge to vote and to increase voter awareness. All sorts of your favorite rappers have signed on to help this cause along and on National Voter Registration Day - Tuesday Sept. 25th - our first event happens in the heart of 3rd Ward!
As you can see this one is a straight up FAM event with Chingo Bling, Doughbeezy, Dat Boi T, The Niceguys, DJ Chill and Zin keeping the party moving and the message flowing. And it's happening at the FAM SPOT - The Reggae Bodega and their new cafe Irie Juices right down there on Almeda off that Southmore exit. One of my favorite blocks in the whole city. 4 - 8 pm, the event is free and open to the public and FAMILY FRIENDLY. Round up your friends who have yet to register to vote and bring them down, and bring yourself and make a pledge to vote and lets really try to make a difference in Harris County.
More events will be listed soon, big one happening in Alief, etc. Lots to talk about. Also look out for our video campaign coming soon. Anyway, it's really going down. Tuesday Sept. 25th at the Reggae Bodega/Irie Juices in the heart of Third Ward! 4814 Almeda Rd, Houston, TX 77004
Flyer by Tosin at Sin-ful Designs

The only song I truly love
At the moment...
Stumbled across this little gem after hearing just part of it on 1xtra this weekend. I think Target's show but i am not totally sure. I have been a fan of Lady Leshurr for a minute now, but need to find out more about Etta Bond obviously, and the producer Raf Riley. Super dope stuff right here. You can download the EP for free right here and you should. Its all over the place in a good way. #intrigued

FREESTYLE! A.Dd+, Worldwide, Kydd, The Niceguys + BUN B!
Red Bull Skooled Tour 2012 REVISITED!
WORD TO THE MAN FANG! And PRDC Microcinema, THIS IS SO DOPE!
Maaaaan I missed this as I was outside with the California Kid (see below) but this really went down! And the video looks so dope. A great look at what went down in Corpus Christi on the last night of the Red Bull Skooled Tour. You don't hear a lot about Corpus musically, but shit, DJ Dus and FANG! and all them down there have got it goin' on for real. The scene is dope, the downtown is dope, the people are great. I need to go to Corpus more often, and this is reminding me of that fact. Word to the House of Rock. I need to get back there ASAP!
When's the next Red Bull Skooled Tour??? HMMMM I WONDER!

Sunday Night ATX! Western Tink, Milli Mars & MORE at Club 1808!
SAY MAYNE THIS IS SOMETHING REAL! Two of the best in Texas right now hands down! Pushing envelopes and such.
Western Tink is from Austin and Milli Mars is from San Antonio. Sunday night they'll be at one of my favorite spots Club 1808, right there on 12th and Chicon with Lavish, Sam Rubik and Nouveau Riche. If you want to see the present future of Texas hip-hop in an intimate environment with cheap drinks on a good night in the city, this is where you need to be. Don't miss the bus. Real talk.
9pm it's really happening.

Rest In Peace MVGGIE
Stay Strong Candice
And prayers for you both, and your familes and all of us in the Texas hip-hop community who really feel this loss.
Got a text from my brother Mason on Monday morning that sent me into shock. Two of his close friends, and close friends of many in the Texas hip-hop community had gone out on Sunday night and their car ran out of gas. They pulled over onto an exit ramp, went and filled up a gas can and while they were filling the tank an SUV hit them. Maggie Wilson was killed, Candice Anderson remains in the hospital.
The two are best friends in every sense of the word, and that was evident the couple of times I was around them. I didn't know them well but we met, and had communicated over the internet at times (it's 2012) and I always knew they were the kind of people who were really real about this music. Also, real about the right kind of music. The real stuff coming out of Texas and making it just great these days. We need more people like this.
Anyway I can't lie, when I look at them I see my daughters fast forwarded 15 years or so. Super hip, smart, music heads running things in their own world. With so much to look forward to. And Candice you still have a lot to look forward to. I hope everyone stands together to help her and the families get through this. This is truly a tragic loss on so many levels.
There's a couple videos from Dallas TV after the jump... Rest in Peace MVGGIE, Get Well Soon and Stay Strong Candice. And all the rest of y'all be careful out there.

AustinSurreal Show 9/2/12 DL Link + Playlist
OK So why I don't do this every week, I don't know, but from here on out... well, I plan to.
Been doing the AustinSurreal Show on Radio KAOS for 2.5 years now. Did the Brunch With an L show twice a week for the past 7 months, but had to give that up (sadly) as I just can't do three shows a week at the moment. But if you don't know, the AustinSurreal show is my internet radio show (podcast, whatevz) that happens every Sunday night from 7-9pm CST. There's no format, I play what I like, from all over the world, with an emphasis on Texas, of course. Its an eclectic show from a hip-hop perspective. I am pretty sure there's nothing else like it. I know because I try to listen to all kinds of radio shows, like, all the time, and well this show here is the only one where you will hear gangsta rap (real shit not radio shit), Butcher Bear and Bjork on the same show.
Whatevs. I'd love it if you'd tune in every week live, and when you miss it live, go and get the archives. It's there for the taking. You can tune in on www.kaosradioaustin.org, or on KAOS RADIO AUSTIN on the TuneIn App or site, and on the exxxxclllluuuuusive free AustinSurreal app for Iphone/Ipad.
So there you have it. Tune in Tokyo and jam with me. Playlist and link to listen after the jump.

Free Download: Kydd - The RIghteous LP
Yes, I full well know how late I am on this. WEEKS, which may as well be centuries in internet time but whatever, it was the summertime.
My young bro Kydd done created a masterpiece. I actually listen to this in its entirety while driving, and get mad when it's over. The boy done did that. Features from Worldwide, Western Tink, GLC, Tank and way more great artists all over this one here. An actual album, and the production is bananas. Next level. And from ATX. Stand up.

Friday Video Mix
I'm not really good at doing anything with any sort of regularity but I am going to try and force myself to post some new videos from Texas every Friday. New one from Dat Boi T starts things off then after the jump there's a few good ones from Trae, Z-Ro, and more (that are more than a week old, ok fine, I'm just getting started here).

A3C Straight Outta Texas Showcase Is Really Goin' Down!
Last year I attended the A3C Hip-Hop Festival in Atlanta and said to myself that I would never miss another A3C again. It really is THAT festival. It's where you go if you truly love this culture called hip-hop and want to see where it's at right here right now and right in front of your eyes. Peep the entire line up on www.a3cfestival.com and get your (cheap) tickets now! I mean seriously, this is the most economically viable hip-hop event of all time, OF ALL TIME!
Finna freak out. Check out a couple videos below of a few of the artists you will see and stay tuned for updates as they come in!

And this one, his new single "Ending Cycle" way up there on the list as well:

From The Atlantic: Should Hip-Hop Artists Be Allowed to Release Albums From Jail?
By Tim Bella, a man who came up in Texas but now resides in New York and writes for the Atlantic. The story centers around South Park Mexican, a man who was a bonafide Latin hip-hop cultural icon for a good period of time. You may or may not know his story but I do, all too well.
If he did actually do what he was convicted of then of course, I and any other human with a functioning brain and heart feel as though he got what he deserved. But I always felt that there was way more to this case and that there were definitely things that didn't add up. SO I have mixed feelings on all of this. I am quoted in this article, and I stand by what I said, he was THE MAN back when he was at his peak. What happened later, is a whole nother story.
At any rate Tim did a great job here. And my feelings about the question at hand, Should hip-hop artists be able to release albums from jail, aren't really all that simple. I personally feel as though jail is supposed to be equally for rehabilitation purposes as they are for punishment. And making art can really help with that healing process. But I mean, all of this should be looked at on a case by case basis. I think that creative people should be creative. Its a quandary. Anyway check it out link is below.

So much for getting "back up in that azz" 2 weeks ago
More than 2 weeks ago I came up on here on the ol AustinSurreal to say that I was back. After a full on summer of as much internet avoidance as I could muster up, I was ready to start back to blogging. Doing what I do best as they say. But alas and alak, shortly after posting that Geto Boys video I got a call from my dear friend Lynda to tell me that the head of SXSW Music, Brent Grulke, had passed away in a tragic scenario while undergoing oral surgery. That not only threw my, and about a thousand other lives into chaos, it sent me into a bit of a tailspin/depression and honestly I stopped thinking about blogging and everything else for a minute. Probably pretty common when someone close to you is taken suddenly and way too soon. I hope he is resting in peace and I pray for his family.
Then one week later I got news that one of my closest friends from my just post high school days, Aaron Ruark passed away in his sleep. I still don't know what happened. All I know is I lost my dude, 38 years old, with a beautiful young daughter AND he was about to be married the following Saturday to a wonderful woman named Nicki I had just met two weeks prior when I was in Cleveland for the League of Extraordinary G'z show with our mutual best friend Mike. I was so bummed that I wasn't going to be able to make it to the wedding, money is tight as always, and he was on my mind a lot in the days leading up to his untimely passing. Dude, he was 38, I don't know wtf happened, I just know that it's got me and a lot of good people all fucked up.
I truly hope he is resting in peace, but really I just wish he was still here. Words can't even describe it.
But I guess I'm back. Big announcement coming soon, when I decide what indeed the decision behind that announcement will be. Stay tuned.
Rest in Peace My Brother Aaron Ruark...

Back Up In That Ass Its The Ressurection
Geto Boys Live at Gathering of the Juggalos
It's been a minute y'all. A lil more than a month to be exact since I done blogged anything. Well you know, maybe a man needed a break. But I'm back and live and in fool effect. What better way to come back than to post this video of the Geto Boys come back at the Gathering of the Juggalos this past weekend? Interning at the studio when the Geto Boys recorded We Can't Be Stopped is what got me into the Houston scene and I haven't turned back since. Texas mayne, here's the legends, back killing it LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE!
I saw a review that said the show was "hit and miss." Um, outside of the first 30 seconds or so, looks pretty hittin' to me! THE GETO BOYS ARE BACK! (I hope...)
