For it is upon us

We're live in the mix, SXSW www.93.399999999999999999fm102Mhz, dial it in, find it on your internets, let it take you over and bring you down to the field where it's all about to go down.

I mean the street, the 6th street and it's vicinity. Where 1,700+ bands are about to descend and make sure it goes down. You're anticipating you're flight, I'm down here already in it, as if it's already happening, like except the music isn't happening yet it's just all the hustle and the bustle, the last minute hustles and bustles are always the worst. The shit hit's the fan and you're there sitting on the toilet thinking you finally have time to do such a thing, but alas and alak you do not. Cuz once it hits the fan, it's all over the place and you'd better be there to clean it up.

And it's serious, I mean, I thought to myself all week about how on Saturday (yesterdayish) I was going to get my work done and head down south side to the Alamo Theater in the shopping plaza where the Texas Beat offices used to be and see GONZO, the Hunter S. Thompson documentary.

I recently finished reading the recent book of the same name that Rolling Stone published. Now that was a brilliant read. Many of Hunter's friends, family, foes, allies, co-conspirators, etc, talking big about the Father of Gonzo Journalism, so I felt as though I had to see the film. Well once again, book trumps film.

That's not to say that Gonzo is a bad film, it has some really strong moments. The footage of HST is of course very welcome, but to fit the life of a man who lived his so fully into two hours, is almost a futile pursuit. And to waste any minutes of such a film on anyone else, is almost utterly ridiculous. Like for instance, they went pretty much in order, and when they came to Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, they started going real in depth about the politicians and the politicos and the other hacks on the trail and I started thinking to myself how I was no longer learning anything about Hunter (I actually didn't learn much cuz Ive obsessively read pretty much everything he's written and many of the things that have been written about him) but I was just looking at a bunch of politicians.... meanwhile I could be on the computer promoting my SXSW shows on the internets and I started thinking to myself how I just could not justify sitting and staring at a screen for two hours when I have so much to do, so I slid my body underneath the lil table at the Alamo Drafthouse South and slithered out of my seat on to the floor only to sneak out and race home to do what it is I need to do these days.

Promote these shows.

I'll post a full on list of my shit with updates and recommendations tomorrow so tune into AustinSurreal and forward the list onto everyone you know who may be in Austin this week.

We getting a heliplane and some hash pills for the haters. And if they wanna play games, we'll see you at the big chess set on Sunday.

For it's a long road to Buffalo, especially if yer headed east on I-90 through Cleveland and Erie at this particular time of year. There's 20 inches of snow on the ground in my home town and I'm down here whining about 50 degree weather and a little work. It's going to be bright and sunny and warm all week in Austin, TX, I can feel it, you can feel it, we all can have it, when it comes. This Wednesday. See you in Austin. Call me when you get here.

-------------------------------------------------

Also this week, the SXSW FILM FESTIVAL Starts. You can see the entire schedule here. And below here's a few advance reviews I wrote about some films I am very excited about.

I highly recommend this one:

Don’t Get Me Wrong
DIR: Adina Pintilie
(Romanian with English Subtitles)

Sitting down to watch Don’t Get Me Wrong, a beautiful, slice of life film set in a Romanian Neuropsychiatric Hospital in 2006, one might be easily confused by its premise. And that might just be the point.

Director Adina Pintilie has stated that she went into the facility for eight days, without much of a plan other than to document some of the things she had read in the papers about the people who live behind the stark gray walls that extend seemingly up to Heaven for the people who exist within them, day in, day out, for the bulk of their lives.

What she left with is a story of love.

Not a love story in the traditional sense, there is nothing traditional about Don’t Get Me Wrong, but a love story that mirrors the foibles of the pursuits of love and success in our high octane modern world, with the simpler pursuits of a group of human beings who seem to get by just fine with almost nothing.

Pintilie observes, rather than follows, five patients through their daily lives, one of whom, named Ignat, has spent everyday for the past 40 years in the same spot, moving stones from one side of a plank to the other. The only thing that stops or bothers him is the rain.

Cut to a seemingly never ending conversation between a schizophrenic, obsessive, stair sweeping philosopher with a deep connection to God, and a man who claims to be the only person on Earth who God has given the power to stop the rain, and you begin to realize that the lesson to be learned with this film is much deeper than what appears on the surface.

While the characters in this film are often looked upon as outcasts, without much social worth, the reality may be that these misunderstood eccentrics have a better grasp on what life is really about than 9/10ths of modern society. They know how their actions affect their microcosm of the big picture and in doing what they do, day in, day out, they keep a certain sort of peace for themselves and all who surround them. They find freedom in their confinement, while much of the “free” world works hard to confine themselves. (Matt Sonzala)

Couldn't find an embed link for the Trailer but you can see the trailer HERE.

And this one is a real eye opener as well. The message mathces the strength of the music. Serious, if you make music, see this one and learn something about what it is that you do...

The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee “Scratch” Perry
DIR: Ethan Higbee, Adam Bhala Lough
95 MIN 2008

In the opening scene of this thoughtful documentary on one of reggae music’s earliest innovators and creators, a lone Jamaican Television presenter dressed in a sharp 3-piece suit, stares deeply into the camera and calmly says to his audience, “I’d like you to meet a genius.” He then goes on to laud the accomplishments of his upcoming mystery guest, dropping names of some of the artists he produced in his earliest days – the broadcast is from the late 60’s – and concludes with the statement, “He’s not only a record producer, he’s a songwriter, a poet, a musician, a video expert, and overall, a Rastaman.”

Quick cut to an example of his video/poetic work and you see a shirtless Perry, spinning around in circles outside his Jamaican home, in plaid short, shorts with oversized sunglasses covering his marijuana reddened eyes, and a kufi over his unkempt locks. He is chanting the praises of Jah Rastafari in a language only the deepest Rasta could possibly understand, while flailing his arms and gyrating manically, like a man possessed.

He seems crazy, but as the film progresses, you realize that Lee Perry was never possessed by any sort of devil, not in the traditional sense anyway. But his soul was obviously overtaken by the spirit of rhythm, as his every word, movement and nuance is punctuated by an irrational cadence, wholly unique to him.

A mystery to most of his fans for the bulk of his career, Perry brought reggae music to the masses by providing off kilter rhythms to such greats as Bob Marley, Junior Murvin and Max Romeo, to name but a few. His colorful and creative existence was the subject of many rumors and tales, both wholly true and oft-times understated. This film offers a tell-all explanation of one of music’s most colorful and genre splitting, pace setters, told mostly from his own mouth.

With the wisdom of an elder who saw a genre of music progress from birth to present times, his musical revelations are nothing short of revolutionary, and as the film comes to a close, if you still don’t quite understand the man behind the music, you’ll surely have gained a better understanding of the music that made the man. And helped shape a deep, cultural, renaissance. (Matt Sonzala)

And then of course there's this, which I had been waiting to see for some time. Don't miss out. You have not see this side of Iraq.

Heavy Metal In Baghdad
DIR: Eddy Moretti, Suroosh Alvi
84 MIN 2007

Given what we have seen on the news and been told for many years about Iraq and its neighbors in the Middle East, quite possibly the last thing one might think about coming out of the war torn, heavily religious region could be heavy metal music.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad not only follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda – Latin for “black scorpion” - from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day, it gives its viewers an inside look at the human side of modern Iraq. A place where average, everyday people live, work, and try to survive in their war torn world.

Acrassicauda is a four piece band, not unlike any four piece metal band from any town on this side of the world. They play the same riffs, wear the same clothes and want the same things as their worldwide contemporaries. But due to cultural differences and religious standards, they are not fully free to practice and produce their art. Even worse, chicks don’t come out to their gigs!

Bombs drop, gun shots ring out, Military Police question and detain the artists and film makers involved, but still they persist, and from a magnificent struggle comes a dynamic film that delivers a slice of life no other film has produced before it.

The film takes you from the bands peak, just after the toppling of Sadaam Hussein, to three years later when they are living in exile in Syria. The directors – better known as two of the main editors of Vice Magazine – take time out to examine the nuances of the city that produced their subjects, and give a truly well rounded vision of what life in Iraq is really like, through the eyes of its average citizens. It’s nothing like what you have seen on Fox News, but it sure ain’t the Sunset Strip. (Matt Sonzala)

Anyway, go see some films. Celebrate great art for the next couple weeks in Austin, TX. Cuz it's really goin' down...

P.S. I don't think that SXSW Selected this next clip but it is hands down my favorite short film of all time. It says so much in such little time. Sums up EVERYTHING!

BRILLIANT! Now back to work...

Hip-Hop, Politics & The Politics of the Music Business

Chuck D once called Hip-Hop “Black people’s CNN.” Is it still today? Do today’s rap artists feel as though their hands are tied when it comes to speaking on social issues? Is it only about the party in 2008? Does the music business actively try to stifle the potential message? Are politics relevant in music? Do you care?

Hip-Hop, Politics & The Politics of the Music Business

Chuck D once called Hip-Hop “Black people’s CNN.” Is it still today? Do today’s rap artists feel as though their hands are tied when it comes to speaking on social issues? Is it only about the party in 2008? Does the music business actively try to stifle the potential message? Are politics relevant in music? Do you care?

Got Drank???

Cuz I do...

It's the world's first anti-energy drink! Combining Rose Hips, Melatonin and Valerian Root with a great tasting beverage to um, well, create the world's first anti-energy drink.

I'm a lil scared, but not as scared as I am of the actual energy drinks. See, I need to "slow my roll," cuz I'm a total maniac inside. Energy drinks just jazz me the fuck up. It's also why I don't do cocaine (also, I'm not a squirrel).

Anyway, yeah I got that DRANK, what you need?

(P.S. Note the prescription bottle in the logo. The promo materials, which I will have on Monday, don't have the bottle on them.)

My First SXSW

(As most of y'all know, I recently moved to Austin to work full on for SXSW. I've been coming to SXSW and enjoying the fruits of its loins since 1991 I think, and I recently decided that I'll reflect on some of the finer times I have had at said conference and in the end possibly tie it in with a good report of what it's like to work here behind the scenes after 17 years of revelry. And such. I don't know, you might hate this story. But I don't so here it is. And it's all 100% true.)

-----------------

It was 1991 and I had just moved to Houston from Erie, Pennsylvania a year and six months previous. I was 19 years old and booking tours for small punk rock bands, thinking I was on a path to a whirlwind life in the music business. Round about the first of the year, one of my good friends from my hometown decided that he was going to hop freight trains and travel around the country for a year or so, and asked if I would meet him in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. I said sure, and not really knowing what Mardi Gras was at the time, I showed up in town two weeks prior and crashed with a promoter friend of mine, Deborah Toscano from Devil Dolls (who incidentally is presenting a showcase at SXSW this year).

Deborah’s grandfather had left her a huge house when he passed, and said house became a flophouse for wayward punk rockers like myself. In fact I think by the time Fat Tuesday came around, there were about thirty of us there. But at the moment it was just me, my boy Mike, Jason - a roadie for NOFX, and Deborah and a bunch of her hot girlfriends. (Who would grow to hate us fairly quickly. Well, not Jason, anyway.)

You’ll see where this all ties in, in a minute.

So over the course of two weeks in New Orleans, we met a lot of people, including another promoter named Mary X. When we first met she told us about her HUGE Fat Tuesday event she was preparing for with headliners, L-7 and a few local bands. One of her openers had just canceled and in a drunken stupor I informed her that Mike and I had a band, and we would love to open up. Not sure where the name came from, but we told her we were called the Magnum 440 Honeybuns and we would be glad to open up.

For some reason she let us, I’m still not sure why.

By the time Fat Tuesday came around, we had recruited a bass player and a drummer, wrote a song about a homeless dude named Red and his old lady Catherine, who we had spent a couple days with down to the Quarter, and raided all the girls closets for things to wear on stage. Somehow we convinced the second band of the night to let us use their equipment and we got on stage dressed like homeless transsexuals. I remember that I had a pink bra on under a ripped Public Enemy t-shirt, a fishing hat and some stretchy pink and purple leggings on. Yeah, I was New York hipster dude fifteen years early, I know.

Mike had on some crushed velvet pants and no shirt or shoes and when the lights came on the stage he ripped into a raging version of “Smoke on the Water,” whilst our rhythm section just plodded away in some sort of 4/6 time or some shit and I rolled on the floor thinking I was Nick Cave.

All this lasted about 8 minutes. I fell off the stage, Jason NOFX dude started a pit, about half the crowd went outside to smoke, we said Thank You, Good Night and went off to find Donita Sparks to see if she thought we rocked. (Donita Sparks will be performing at SXSW this year as well, though I am sure her memories of this particular evening are not as vivid as mine).

O.K. Enough about New Orleans, this is about SXSW.

So we leave New Orleans and go back to Houston where we are informed of a huge music festival going down in Austin just a week or so later. Mike decided to stay in Houston and on Day one of SXSW 1990, we got back in my small Toyota Station Wagon and headed for Austin.

At the time, I had no idea what SXSW was. I had no idea what 6th Street was. I didn’t know there was a University called “Texas,” all I knew was that it was going down and we were going to be there.

It was like Mardi Gras all over again. The streets were packed, I think back then you maybe even could drink on the streets (I know we did), and to me SXSW was like the ultimate playground. We somehow found a schedule and decided that our first show would be the hip-hop showcase at what I think at the time was called The Sanitarium, though maybe it was Hip-Hop City, now known as Elysium.

We walked in at probably 7:55 p.m. with the first act going on promptly at 8:00. I’ll never forget this moment as it was quite possibly the worst show I had ever seen (save for the one we had just done ourselves a week or two prior in New Orleans).

It was a white rapper from Houston named Jeff Romeo. I had never heard of the dude, almost couldn’t believe he existed. He came out in a bright green and white parachute OUTFIT with a fluorescent green biker cap with the bill flipped up and proceeded to kick his ultra nasal raps while three black dudes danced behind him. Yes, dudes.

At one point he said to the crowd – that consisted of me, Mike, my friend Rich, the stage manager, sound man, and possibly his parents – “Y’all know this white boy can ROCK too right?” And of course we yelled “HELL YEAH!” At this point, the dancers had run backstage behind the curtain for a costume change. As the opening, sampled, guitar riffs kicked in, the trio of dancers emerged from behind the curtain in Bon Jovi wigs, strumming little plastic ukulele’s and banging their heads in unison.

It was then that we decided to walk outside and smoke a joint in front of the police station. After that we went back into the club and saw MC Overlord who I think also had male dancers, but killed it, and later that night I fell in love with the Cooley Girls.

Also later that night we realized that we had no place to stay, so we headed out some road, possibly 290, pulled over and slept in the car.

The next morning, like 7 am-ish, we were awoken by the police, who searched our car but didn’t find the dime bag or so of schwag we had stashed, and we went to some overcrowded breakfast spot and sat for a few hours.

That night we hit up the Cannibal Club and saw Happy Flowers play to a bunch of people I would later learn were quite “famous” on the Austin scene. There was the chunky girl with long black hair and tattoos who would go to shows in her lingerie. I saw Gibby Haynes pass by, caught my first glimpse of Tim Kerr in person, and wondered aloud why there were so many shirtless, white boy funkateers in this town? Could it be something they put in the water?

I want to say that later that night we saw Tripping Daisy (after Happy Flowers, how ironic), who I always thought sucked, and then went out onto the street to figure out what we were going to do for a crash spot. See, we had no money and once again made no effort to find a place to stay. I remember standing on the corner of 6th and Neches, feeling a lil run down and mopey, Mike was straight up angry at the prospect of sleeping in the car again, and I was basically informing him that we really weren’t going to have much of a choice.

Then all of a sudden a girl walks up to me and says “HEY! Didn’t I see your band in New Orleans? Didn’t y’all open for L-7?” I said “Yeah, hell yeah that was us!”

We chatted for a minute about how awesome our performance was and how most of the people there probably just didn’t “get it” and she then asked me what we were doing for the rest of the night.

“Why we’re coming with you of course,” was my reply.

She knew of a party up by campus, so we followed her there and saw some band who was a little bit too influenced by the Butthole Surfers. It was late and we were in a residential neighborhood, so of course the cops came. They didn’t just come, they barreled in 20 deep shining flashlights and causing a ruckus. Not sure how, but we all made it out the backdoor and down the street to the girls apartment and she graciously allowed us to stay on her living room floor, as the band The Buck Pets were actually staying on her couches and in her room.

Got up the next morning and basically did the whole SXSW thing again. Drink for breakfast and keep the party moving till it stops itself. That night we came back to the apartment where the girl, a couple of her girlfriends and the Buck Pets were playing cards. We lit up a bunch of joints, and basically passed out with our local friends having a drunken, screaming argument about abortion rights (seriously).

This went on into the wee hours and obviously pissed off her downstairs neighbors because at 7 a.m. said neighbor turned her music on full blast and started bashing the ceiling hard with a broomstick. That actually didn’t wake me up, what roused me was the sound of our hostess exploding from her bedroom screaming “YOU BITCH!” She then ran downstairs, yanked a metal fence post from the ground and began smashing out all of her neighbors windows. Of course the police were called, and again we made our exit before having to deal with them.

SXSW was over and we headed back to Houston with a story to last a lifetime.

(Coming soon, why I'll always have love for Jim Testa, my favorite rock critic/writer dude/guitar GOD).

I've got a question

Why the fuck is congress dealing with rap music and steroid use in baseball? They should be working to legalize marijuana and finding new ways to give welfare and health care to 30-something slacker dudes who need it such as myself.

But no, they are talking about baseball. A gazillion dollar industry that in reality has nothing to do with whats really important in our world.

They some fools to me. I say let all athletes do all the drugs they want. Extend the baseball field to 10,000 feet from the plate to the home run wall. Give us something to watch, and quit worrying about who's who and what's what. Just stop.

You're wasting my time and tax dollars. Free Roger Clemens. Free us all. Legalize steroids. Fuck it.

From HoustonSoReal
BUN B RETURNS TO THE STAGE!

And real talk, the people really came out for him, and of course Pimp.

I ran out the back door at work round about 3:30 and hit the road to Houston. I expected the show to be big, but when I called Jeff Messina and he told me that the show had pre-sold more tickets than any hip-hop show ever at Warehouse Live, I knew shit was gonna get crazy.

Bun was in fine form. After short sets from a nice slice of the UGK Family - Cory Mo, MDDL FNGZ, Hezeleo, 17, etc - Bun B BLASTED onto a crowded stage and proceeded to rip through what seemed like every hit and feature he ever did in the past 15 years.

It's crazy cuz when you see the scene on stage (literally 250 people up there behind Bun) you'd think it would have been total chaos, but it wasn't. Everyone up there was there to hold down Bun, not just to be seen. Most of the folks up there were some of Houston's biggest and best artists, and I think every one of them got on the mic at one point or another.

The people really got their moneys worth. Trust.

Mama Wes - Pimp C's mother - was in the house. I can't imagine how she must feel, cuz while I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this show, one thing I kept thinking, and honestly getting a little angry about (I can't help this) was "Man, what if Pimp was up here on this stage too?"

It's still a mystery to me as to why UGK did so few shows. It's a moot point now and I am happy to say that I am one of the few people who got to see them multiple times. I should do a post someday about all the times I went to see UGK over the years. Like the time they played TSU in 1994 with Brand Nubian, The Odd Squad and Seeds of Soul. Or like when I went to see them in Baytown but the parking lot got shot up before the show could ever begin and I ended up ducking down the side of a bayou wall to keep out of range of all the bullets. That was probably 1993 or so.

And then these dudes

Stopped traffic.

Whew, what a night. The vibes were so right, the energy was electric, the sound was flawless, the flow was uninterrupted by any bullshit. It just went perfect and I hope Bun takes this show on the road. You should too.

Ever wonder why when Houston was at its peak there was never a Houston tour? I bet some of the big head motherfuckers who fucked that up two years ago would love to go do that now. Watch.

Anyway, Rest in Peace Pimp C. I don't personally believe the coroners report. I don't believe in Hollywood. I don't believe a lot of the shit that happens in this world. All I can say at this point is Rest in Peace Pimp, and Bun, I wanna watch you walk across that stage at the Grammy's tonight - hopefully early in the show so I don't have to watch all that other bullshit. But I already know how they do. Do they even show the rap award? I'll be watching.
